The Fortress Island of Pampus was built between 1887 and 1895. A masterful military plan for the protection of Amsterdam had been devised after the Franco-German War: the Defence Line of Amsterdam. To repel a possible attack from the IJ, they decided to build a fortress in the IJmeer. They used a raised part of a silted-up shallow known as “Pampus”. Although Pampus was commissioned by the Ministry of War, it was never actually used for any acts of war. It did serve as a training location for the German army during the Second World War, however.
At the end of the 1980s people decided to stop the decline of the island, and established the Pampus Foundation. An army of volunteers freed the fortress from garbage, rubble and vegetation. Year by year, the Fort Island of Pampus regained some of  its old splendor. Thanks to years of commitment from many volunteers, the fortress has become a real landmark. From a military bastion it has now turned into an island of peace, history and fun for young and old.
