Zuiderzee museum
Zuiderzee museum
The Zuiderzee museum was founded in 1948to record fishing culture around the former Zuiderzee. When the Zuiderzee was separated from the North Sea in 1932, people were worried that the culture of the Zuiderzee area would be lost. 130 Historical buildings were given pride of place in the open outdoor part of the museum.
Outdoor museum
In the open air part of the museum you will find authentic buildings from the former Zuiderzee area like a church, a smokehouse, shops and dwellings from the surrounding fishing villages. Staff and volunteers show historical crafts and demonstrate daily life around the beginning of the 20th century. Some of the presentations show modern interpretations of traditional techniques.
Indoors
The indoor part of the museum is the treasure trove of the Zuiderzee. Temporary exhibitions show the museum’s collections in a modern context, translating their context to today. There is something for everyone: history, photography, folk costume, design and interactive family exhibitions.
Visit the Zuiderzee museum
The complete museum can take a full day to explore, but a lot can be seen in a few hours with a school group or for adults. A visit to the Zuiderzee museum can be easily combined with a weekend’s sailing on the Catharina van Mijdrecht. We will be happy to organize this for you.
Check the museum’s website for more information on current exhibitions.
