Volendam
The Dike of Volendam with its many shops for browsing, restaurants and terraces, where hundreds of tourists enjoy the atmosphere and the view of the harbour and the water every day. The Doolhof (maze), where you can imagine yourself in quiet streets from a hundred years ago, and the boats that sail to and from the island of Marken on the horizon. Volendam, a village that has been visited and immortalized by famous painters from 1880 onwards, and that is still sung of as the pearl of the Zuiderzee.  It appeals to the imagination of millions of visitors worldwide to this day.

Groups of up to 60 people are effortlessly photographed. The charming hosts and hostesses are ready to welcome you and cheerfully help you with your metamorphosis into a real Volendammer.

A walk through Volendam
You can take a guided walk through Volendam. A lady or gentleman in original Volendammer costume will tell you everything about its history and about the many nicknames that people still use. The walk includes the Dike and the Doolhof, with its small dwellings that once housing families with as many as 10 or 15 children.

Smokehouse tour
Just outside the harbour is the smokehouse, where people have been smoking all kinds of fish for over 150 years, with eels being the most coveted. No less than 6 generations of the Smit family have worked here, and they have passed the secret smoking process on to each other. The 5th and 6th generation (Jan Smit and his son Evert) still smoke fish there almost daily, and during the tourist season the whole family is called in to cut, skin, spit and fillet the eels. The smokehouse also offers guided tours, where people are introduced to the world of the eel and traditional fish smoking.

Hotel Spaander
De Oude Herberg (the Old Inn); it all started in 1881 in this part of the hotel. Here, founder and host Leendert Spaander welcomed his guests. An avid art lover, he offered his hospitality to many artists in exchange for a painting. Out of respect for their founder, his descendants have left this space intact as much as possible. The Oude Herberg still breathes a unique atmosphere from bygone times. Not surprisingly, the walls are decorated with dozens of paintings that add even more allure.

The Experience
Experience Volendam is located in the middle of the harbour. A new attraction to experience the glorious history of Volendam in a  modern way. Enjoy holographic performances and virtually brave the wild waves of the Zuiderzee in 1916 with an Oculus Rift.  An impressive experience for all ages.
