Marken
Marken
Marken is a colorful peninsula in the Markermeer. In the old village, the wooden houses are huddled together on artificial mounds. Walk the narrow alleys, cross the drawbridges and look at the houses that look as if they’re in a museum.
Folk costume
Marken’s colourful folk costume stems from the late middle ages. A lot has changed since then, of course; these costumes have their own fashion trends.
We may not see traditional costumes in daily life as much as we used to, but the Markermuseum is full of them. Especially on holidays like Koningsdag they are taken out of the closets and embellished with extra orange accessories. The little ones play their part too, in orange skirts, shirts and jackets.
Guide in traditional costume
Marken is an especially authentic traditional piece of Holland, beautifully preserved and well worth a visit. Hear its stories and legends from a knowledgeable and enthusiastic guide in folk costume during a guided tour of the historical centre.
Dairy farm and clog factory
For over 35 years, Henri Willig and his Hoeve (farmstead) have been informing thousands of visitor each year about traditional cheesemaking and clogmaking. A very popular attraction due to its traditional Dutch atmosphere, instructional character and, of course, the cheese-tasting at the end!
