Marken
Marken is a particularly colourful peninsula in the Markermeer. The houses on the terpen (artificial mounds) are huddled closely together, often on stilts. Walk through narrow alleys, over drawbridges and past the wooden houses that look like they belong in a museum. Crisp white-painted window frames contrast sharply with the black and green of the houses. Fresh laundry flutters in the wind and the boats bob up and down in the harbour.

Folk costume
Marken’s colourful costume dates back to the late Middle Ages. Much has changed over the centuries; traditional clothing also follows a kind of fashion. The costume is not seen as much in the daily streetscape, but the Marken museum is full of it. On a holiday like King’s Day, these clothes are taken out of the closet and worn with lots of orange details. Smaller children too will be dressed in orange skirts, short jackets in exuberant colours, handmade pinafores and caps with embroidered throat straps.
