Basic, extensive and luxury refers to catering; with our extensive packages there is more choice, and the luxury packages are of a higher quality as well. Of course, there is plenty of food for everyone, with all our meals.

Choose basic if your budget is limited, but for a few euros more per person you can already have our extensive package. Go for luxury if you don’t want your guests to want for anything.

You can also combine different catering versions within an arrangement; for example, if you want the luxury BBQ but the rest can be a bit more basic. Please let us know your wishes with your request, and we will make a custom offer.

For safety reasons, we do not serve alcoholic beverages before 14:00. Non-alcoholic drinks are available before 14:00. In consultation, bar times can be extended.

The Catharina van Mijdrecht has a daytime capacity of 40 passengers.
In addition she has 18 berths, in 7 double rooms and 1 family room.

On request, the forecastle with four extra beds can be made available, and an additional three people can sleep on the couches in the day room.

When you want to book the Catharina van Mijdrecht, we will send you a quote. If you agree with our offer, we will send you a rental agreement per e-mail. You must return it, signed, within two weeks. This can be done by post or by e-mail.

The rental price is for the rent of the entire ship* including crew, 9% VAT, port and lock fees, tourist tax and fuel for approx. 1 engine hour per day. Additional engine use in consultation, possibly at additional cost.

When you book the ship, the payment terms are as follows:

50% of the  amount within fourteen days;
50% of the  amount by fourteen days before departure.

When you intend to book the ship, we will send you an insurance brochure. Here, you will find information about specific insurances for a sailing trip. This includes cancellation and/or storm insurance.

We are not an insurance agent and are therefore not allowed to offer you insurance directly. If you have any questions regarding this, or would like to take out an insurance, please refer to your insurance company.

Monnickendam
Most of our sailing trips start from Monnickendam. This medieval harbour town, a ten-minute drive from the A10 motorway around Amsterdam, is the ideal departure port for both short and longer sailing trips. Monnickendam has a rich history and is now a protected cityscape. It is not yet overrun by tourists. There is ample free parking near the ship and it is easily accessible by public transport (see also 9292.nl) . There are regular bus services to and from Amsterdam Central Station, even at night.

Route from Amsterdam A10 ring road:
Ring Amsterdam A10 north side (Zaandam / Zaanstad), exit S116 to Volendam;
straight ahead through Broek in Waterland;
exit at Monnickendam;
over the Bernhard Bridge (church on your left), straight ahead; to the roundabout and then exit left;
first right and immediately left again (before the water);
150m to Monnickendam charter port.

If you come by coach:
The streets in the old centre of Monnickendam are very narrow! Therefore, do not try to get to the port with the help of your navigation computer, but follow these directions:
Exit Monnickendam – over the Bernard Bridge (on your left is a church).
At the roundabout, go straight ahead – then first left and left again.
There is a parking space for buses by the water.
Cross the footbridge to the charter port, ’t Prooyen and old Monnickendam.

In Monnickendam you will find plenty of free parking within walking distance of the ship.
You can let your passengers disembark and unload your luggage, etc. in front of the ship, then park the car nearby. Ask the crew for directions.

A limited parking zone has been set up on ’t Prooyen, the street along the harbour: max. 1.5 hours with parking disc.

Before you come on board, we are often busy preparing the catering or cleaning the ship. Therefore it is not possible to board earlier. The staff have a limited amount of time between departures to carry out this work, and need the hours before you board to have the ship ready for you in time. On request, it may be possible to come on board earlier with a few people to prepare something, or to leave your luggage.

For a day trip, you will need:
A warm sweater and jacket, possibly rainwear, warm hat, camera, sunscreen, sunglasses, (sun) hat, possibly swimwear and towel, sturdy shoes with rubber soles (no heels) and a good mood.

For a multi-day trip, you will also need:
Towel, toiletries, sleeping bag or blanket/duvet, an extra set of clothing and a good book. The beds are equipped with a mattress, fitted sheet and pillow with pillowcase. Optionally, you can rent a duvet with towel.

Do not bring:
Pets, shoes with smooth soles or high heels, a large suitcase. Try to travel light; there is not much space on board. Household appliances such as coffee makers or hairdryers can only be used when we are connected to shore power.

The beds come standard with a mattress with fitted sheet and a pillow with pillowcase. You can bring your own sleeping bag or duvet; a duvet and towel can also be rented for €20.00 per set. Please let us know at least a week before departure if you want to rent duvets; you can pay cash on board.

On board, there is limited space for food; for about 2 to 3 days depending on your needs. So don’t bring too much  at once. There are usually plenty of shopping opportunities along the way. Keep in mind that not all ports have open shops on Sundays. Ask the skipper about the possibilities.

If you book a luxury package, cleaning is included.

With an extensive package, help with the dishes is appreciated.
You can buy off the final cleaning, but you can also take care of it yourselves.

Basic and youth catering includes chores; everyone is expected to actively help in the kitchen and with cleaning.

In case of self-catering, you are also responsible for the cleaning yourselves.

The ship will be clean when  your arrive, and it must be in a similar state when you leave.

Price of final cleaning:
Day trip €75.00 (self-catering only).
Multi-day trip €200.00.
These prices apply to normal soiling and can be settled in cash on board.

Routes are not fixed in advance and will be determined in consultation with you. You can discuss your wishes with the skipper and, depending on the wind and weather, discuss the options. If you wish to plan a route in advance, we will be happy to advise you.

People love to complain about Dutch weather, but in practice it is usually not so bad. Long stretches of bad weather are rare, and rain is often limited to passing showers. Sailing is a water sport, and there is plenty of space below deck to shelter and warm up. Spring and autumn storms are predicted well in advance by modern meteorology, and many can be avoided.

Fortunately, seasickness is rare on board. The size and the weight of the ship (70 tonnes) ensure that the low waves on the IJsselmeer and the Wadden Sea have little impact. Course and destination can often be adjusted to further limit unwanted motion.
If you are prone to motion sickness, we recommend eating and sleeping well and staying outside in the fresh air with a view of the horizon while sailing.
You can always take a travel sickness tablet. However, these may affect your sense of balance and this, as with alcohol, can pose a risk on board. You must bring your own tablets; due to the law on the provision of medication, we are not allowed to give you a travel sickness tablet.

In a harbour, ships are often less than a metre apart, and the portholes are usually open at night for ventilation. On other ships there are often children and/or elderly people, who really need their night’s sleep. We, the crew, are also anything but on holiday, and want to be able to get enough sleep. That is why we have agreed that there will be harbour rest from 22:00. This means that it is quiet upstairs on deck and in the harbour; no more loud conversations or music on deck. Down below there can be a little more partying and if it goes on for another hour in the weekend, no one will complain. If you expect that you will not be able to comply with this rule, please let us know in good time. An alternative place to anchor may be a solution.

The Catharina van Mijdrecht was built in 1916, and is a sailing monument. To keep her in good shape, we invest a lot of time and money in maintenance. In addition, the ship is not owned by a large company but by the skipper and his family, and we do not receive any subsidy. We therefore ask you to take this into account when you have the ship on loan during the trip. It is inevitable that some things will wear out and eventually break down, and there is often no bad intent. Unfortunately we are sometimes confronted with destruction through irresponsible behaviour, sometimes even with intent. These costs will therefore be recovered from you. In all cases, we request that you report any damages and such immediately. If we have to find out for ourselves afterwards, the costs can be high. We also want to keep the ship in good condition for our next guests.

In most cases no sails are set with a wind forecast of 7Bft or more, but an alternative programme is often still possible. For these exceptional cases, you may consider taking out storm insurance.

There are life jackets on board for everyone. If children’s life jackets are required, we ask you to report the weight of the children in good time so that we can arrange the right size of life jacket for them. Children up to the age of 10 are required to wear a life jacket on deck.

The Catharina meets all modern safety requirements set by the Shipping Inspectorate. In addition, we are regularly inspected by competent authorities, and things are adjusted where necessary. However, life on board is not without risk. Comprehensive safety instructions before the start of the trip keep this danger to a minimum. The final result is a relaxed way to travel, with very few accidents compared to other activities.

The Catharina van Mijdrecht meets all legal safety requirements, and her crew has had a thorough training at the Maritime College.

Smoking in the cabins and day room is prohibited for legal reasons. Smoking is allowed on deck under certain conditions, but please do not throw any cigarette butts overboard. Alcohol and drugs are prohibited for minors (under 18) on board. For adults, we recommend using alcohol and legal substances moderately and cautiously, especially during sailing. A hangover is often misinterpreted as seasickness, and can seriously ruin your trip. In order to prevent accidents and/or nuisance, the skipper reserves the right to end the trip at any time in the event of excesses.
