Pieperrace Volendam
On Saturday, April 11th and Sunday, April 12th, 2026, the Pieperrace Foundation will organize the Pieperrace for the fortieth time on the southern IJsselmeer, off the coast of hospitable Volendam. This annual event marks the start of the sailing season. Participants include klippers, tjalks, barges and botters.
The event keeps alive the memory of the risky potato transports from Friesland that Volendam fishermen undertook in their ships during WWII. These transports were used to supply Amsterdam hospitals, among other places.

A weekend of sailing and enjoyment
The Catharina van Mijdrecht will also be participating in the Pieperrace this year, and everyone can participate: Sail along or rent the boat with a whole group.

Why the Pieperrace
The Pieperrace is an annual traditional sailing competition held in the fishing village of Volendam, usually during the first weekend of April. The race is sailed on historic sailing ships such as klippers, tjalks, and botters, and pays tribute to the old sailing traditions of the Zuiderzee.
The name “Pieperrace” refers to the transport of potatoes (piepers) during the famine winter of 1944-1945, when skippers brought food to starving cities.
The race attracts participants and spectators from all over the Netherlands and combines a sporting challenge with a festive atmosphere, complete with music, local delicacies, and a maritime ambiance.
It is a unique event that spotlights Volendam’s rich history and culture.

It’s not only a sporting challenge but also a unique opportunity to experience the rich maritime history of the Netherlands.
