Zuiderzee museum
Zuiderzee Museum
The Zuiderzee Museum was founded in 1948 to record the culture of the fishing communities around the former Zuiderzee. When the Zuiderzee was closed off from the North Sea and became an inland lake in 1932, people were concerned that the culture of the former Zuiderzee area would disappear completely. 130 Historic buildings were given a place in the open-air part of the Zuiderzee Museum.
Historical village
The outdoor part of the museum houses authentic buildings from the former Zuiderzee area, such as a church, a smokehouse, shops, and actual houses from the surrounding fishing villages. Employees and volunteers demonstrate historical crafts and the daily life of the early 20th century. You can get acquainted with these crafts in a hands-on way. A number of presentations show modern interpretations of traditional techniques, materials and themes.
Indoor museum
The indoor part of the museum is the treasure trove of the Zuiderzee. Changing exhibitions show the rich collection of the museum in their current context, so that the stories of the Zuiderzee can also have meaning for today. With history, photography, regional costumes, design and an educational family exhibition, the indoor museum offers something interesting for everyone.
Visit the Zuiderzee Museum
The complete Zuiderzee Museum can take you as long as a day to see everything, but there is a lot that both adults and school groups can see and do in just a few hours. A visit to the Zuiderzee Museum is easily combined with a sailing weekend on the Catharina van Mijdrecht. We will be happy to plan this activity for you.
