Muiden Castle
The Muiderslot (slot = castle) is a medieval to early modern castle, still in good condition, in Muiden in North-Holland. It is a square moated castle, with a round tower on each corner and a large main building with stepped gables within its walls. The castle has a real moat with a drawbridge. There is also a restored vegetable garden and a herb garden.
It is uncertain when the Muiderslot was first built. Most sources say that it was built around 1280 by Count Floris V, but it may have already existed at that time and that the count  only bought it. It was built at the mouth of the Vecht in the Zuiderzee, today’s Markermeer, where Floris V hung a chain across the Vecht to levy a toll from passing ships. Muiden and its harbour are located directly adjacent to the castle.
